D’banj to create new record label

Nigerian entertainer D’banj has revealed his plans to create a new label all his own. In an interview he gave during a recent visit to Ghana, the “Oliver Twist” singer, who recently split from his original Mo’Hits crew, announced that he is on the cusp of a new movement that will change Africa’s music industry.
“My new record label is being structured,” D’banj said and while he couldn’t dish out too many details of his upcoming label, he says “what I have right now and I can tell you is that my new record label has worldwide distribution with Universal Music Group”.
The record label, which D’Banj describes as “a movement”, will help bring some much needed structure to the way music is distributed in Nigeria and in Africa.
While Nigerian artist can carve out a pretty lavish lifestyle on proceeds from live performances, endorsements and concerts, they make little from actual music or CD sales as the industry is plagued with piracy and illegal internet download.
D’banj is confident that his new music label will change that.
“We are bringing Def Jam Universal Music Group to Africa, so that we have a proper structure – so that the way they do it over there, is the way we’ll do it over here,” he said.
The top Nigerian entertainer who made news when he signed with American rapper, Kanye West’s G.O.O.D. Music record label last year, says he is hoping to create a creative atmosphere in Africa where upcoming artists would not need to fly out of the country to get signed by foreign labels.
