My first introduction to sex was rape - Foluke Daramola reveals

Actress Foluke Daramola told Punch:
My first introduction to sex was rape. It was with one of our tenants. I got so close to him and saw him as an elder brother. He looked at me as someone that had been exposed because I was busty and he thought I had had a sexual experience before. So he had his way with me. Then it was not something you tell the whole world. Then they tried to make trouble with him but subsequently people said we should keep quiet about it. We had to try and manage it in our own way even though it affected me for a long time psychologically. I had to gradually get over it. I believed so much in the principle of keeping your virginity till you are married. I started showbiz from Teen TV on DBN with Chichi Okaro. Then I used to be so vocal and when we spoke about pre-marital sex and virginity, I was always so passionate about it. It was such a disadvantage and a pity for me.

President Jonathan at Police College, Ikeja

President Jonathan yesterday afternoon made a surprise visit to the Police College, Ikeja, days after Channels TV exposed the shameful state of the college. The president was actually on his way to an ECOWAS meeting in the Ivory Coast when his plane was diverted to Ikeja.

He immediately proceeded on an inspection tour of the hostels, college kitchen, dining hall and the Officers’ Mess. Then he demanded to know how Channels TV gained access to the college to film the embarrassing condition of the college. No one had an answer for him. He promised to revamp the college after declaring that the documentary by Channels was a smear campaign.
He said:  “This is a calculated attempt to damage the image of this government. The Police College, Ikeja is not the only training institution in Nigeria."

Boko Haram leader Shekau shot, escapes to Mali

There were indications yesterday in Abuja, that the leader of the Boko Haram Islamic sect, Imam Abubakar Shekau was wounded during a gun battle with security men recently.

Sources said in Abuja that security agencies traced the whereabouts of Shekau, who succeeded late Mohammed Yusuf as leader of the sect to Mali, where he escaped to after sustaining injuries during a gun duel with soldiers of the Joint Task Force, JTF, a.k.a Operation Restore Order.

Sources told Saturday Vanguard that the Federal Government approved the deployment of 1,200 soldiers apparently because of the need to arrest the wounded Boko Haram leader.

The Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Azubuike Ihejirika who addressed officers and soldiers of the Nigerian army shortly before they were airlifted to Mali Thursday in Kaduna, asked them to be extra vigilant as there are indications that some terrorists had sneaked into the country with the aim of causing havoc.

Ihejirika however, pointed out that the Nigerian Army was not resting on its oars as the war against terror was being won.

Saturday Vanguard learnt that the battle between the JTF and the sect members took place at Gao city, in the heart of Northern Mali presently under the control of Tuareg militants.Boko Haram

It was further learnt that Shekau, who is having N50million ransom hanging on his head from the Federal Government, was ferried to Mali through one of the porous routes in the vast Nigerian border without Customs and Immigration authorities getting wind of it.

Saturday Vanguard was told that while the Boko Haram leader was being given medication in Gao, the foreign sponsors of the sect’s activities in Nigeria, were busy, using his name to indoctrinate, train and recruit more members for the sect.

Shekau was said to have been shot at a checkpoint when he reportedly attempted to deceive operatives of the JTF by posing as a nomadic Fulani who was returning from a journey. However, on approach of the vehicle conveying him and members of his sect, ‘’a hot exchange of gunfire ensued as the sect members started firing at the soldiers who equally returned fire for fire.’’

During the crossfire, he and two other sect members with him escaped with gunshot wounds while two members of the sect were killed on the spot. Some AK 47 rifles were recovered from the vehicle.

While stating that most of the weaponry including IEDS recovered from Boko Haram members have been traced to the weaponry used during the Libyan uprising against late Libyan leader, Gaddafi, the source said Nigerian security agencies believed that the more sophisticated and deadly weaponry had gotten to the hands of sect members but they are unable to operate them because they are not trained for it.

The source cited the discovery of Shekau’s hideout and the training base for Boko Haram sect members to unleash terror on Nigerians as a further justification of the action of the federal government to deploy 1, 200 troops as well as Airforce fighter and transport aircraft to Mali to help flush out the Tuareg militants and their sponsors.

Saturday Vanguard further gathered that security has been beefed up along the Nigerian Army First Mechanized Division and the Third Armoured Division’s areas of responsibilities with the deployment of soldiers at the borders to complement the work of other security agencies following the escalation of the Mali crisis with a view to checkmating infiltrations into the country by terrorists.

Last December, a total sum of N290 million ransom was approved for anyone who could assist in locating Imam Abubakar Shekau and 18 other leaders of Boko Haram.

A release by the JTF listed the wanted Boko Haram leaders to include five members of the Shurra (the highest decision-making body of the sect) Committee and 19 of their commanders.

The five members of the Shurra Committee of the sect, including Imam Abubakar Shekau whose ramsom was N50 million, and Habibu Yusuf (a.k.a Asalafi), Khalid Albarnawai, Momodu Bama and Mohammed Zangina. Apart from Imam Shekau whose ransom was put at N50 million, the other Shurra members’ ransom was put at N25million each.

A ransom of N10 million each was put on the Boko Haram Commanders including, Abu Saad, Abba Kaka, Abdulmalik Bama, Umar Fulata, Alhaji Mustapha, (Massa) Ibrahim and Abubakar Suleiman-Habu a.k.a Khalid.
Other commanders also included Hassan Jazair, Ali Jalingo, Alhaji Musa Modu, Bashir Aketa, Abba Goroma, Ibrahim Bashir, Abubakar Zakariya and Tukur Ahmed Mohammed.

The JTF statement on the N290 million ransom then, reads in part; “They are wanted in connection with terrorist activities, particularly in the North East zone of Nigeria that led to the killings, bombings and assassination of some civilians, religious leaders, traditional rulers, businessmen, politicians, civil servants and security personnel, among others.

They are also wanted for arson and destruction of properties worth millions of naira. Therefore, anyone with information that will lead to the arrest of any of the listed terrorists or more will have the rewards (placed on them) as stated.’’

Nigeria Army Arrives Bamako

The first set of Nigerian army personnel has arrived in Bamako, Mali, as part of regional and international coalition to rescue Mali from the rebels in the North.

ECOWAS special representative to Mali, Cheikh Toure says, “the Nigerian troops will immediately join the French troops for the ground offensive against the rebels while troops from Niger and Togo will meet at the Malian border.”

Mr. Toure is optimistic that the Nigerian army, with the assistance of the regular Malian troops, would launch the final onslaught on the rebels.

Pre-deployment training
The United States of America has offered pre-deployment training to West African troops and assistance in transporting them to Mali, to enhance the success of the regional initiative.

According to the US, “the assistance is the last option opened to the country under its law because Mali is not a fully fledged democratic country….and it will help the troops to fight alongside their Malian counterpart.”

Going by the US law, Mali’s military cannot be funded as a result of its involvement in coup and counter-coup.

Meanwhile, the US has shared its intelligence with France from satellite and intercepted signals from the Malian rebels.

The Pentagon is also considering sending refuelling tankers so that French jets can fly longer and sustain the combat mission.

The international community, starting from the UN, has backed the military intervention in Mali to dislodge the rebels in the North of the country.

Regional meeting
The ECOWAS heads of state and government will meet on Saturday in Abidjan to discuss the deteriorating security situation in Mali.

A statement from the Ivorian Ministry of Communication said the heads of government' meeting would be preceded by a meeting of the ECOWAS mediatory group on Mali.

Lionel Messi Wins the Best Player of the Year for the Fourth Time

Barcelona and Argentina forward Lionel Messi has been awarded the Ballon d'Or for a fourth year running. Messi, 25, hit 91 goals during 2012 and beat club team-mate Andres Iniesta and Real Madrid's Ronaldo to the trophy.  Despite his goals, the Catalan giants failed to win either the Spanish league title or Champions League last year.  Abby Wambach won the women's award and Vicente del Bosque the coach accolade, while the team of the year was made up only of players from Spain's La Liga.  Messi was announced as the winner of the Ballon d'Or, the award given to the world's best player, during a ceremony held in Zurich on Monday.  He becomes the first player to win four consecutive Ballons d'Or, breaking the record he jointly held with former France  international and current Uefa president, Michel Platini.  "To tell you the truth this is really quite unbelievable," said the Argentine. "The fourth award that I have had is just too great for words.
"I would like to recognise my other colleagues from Barcelona. Andres, it has been great to train and play alongside you.  "I would also like to recognise all of my friends in the Argentina national team, everyone that has worked with me, coaches and staff and my family and my friends. Also my wife and my son. Thank you."  Messi - who polled 41.6% of the votes, with Ronaldo taking 23.68% and Iniesta 10.91% - was favourite to win after surpassing Germany striker Gerd Mueller's record of 85 goals in a calendar year from 1972.
He netted 79 goals for Barcelona, plus another 12 for Argentina, in 69 games for club and country.

HANA’S MAHAMA SWORN IN

Mr. John Dramani Mahama was on Monday sworn in as Ghana’s fourth elected President and Commander-in-Chief before a massive crowd reveling in a moment of historical significance.
His key message at the ceremony was –“the best is yet to come.”
He won the last December 7 election, which he was not even expected to run, but for the death of former President John Atta Mills last July.
The event was witnessed by an estimated 50,000 people, including about 15 Heads of Government, in Accra, the country’s capital.
Millions more followed the event through coverage on television and the Internet.
It took off with a national anthem at some minutes past 10am Ghanaian time. The two-hour long ceremony was watched on widescreen televisions installed all over the country through live feeds from the state broadcaster, the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC).
The GBC was the only media organisation allowed to provide a live feed of the ceremony to other television and radio stations.
The inauguration took place at the beautifully-decorated Black Star Square.
President Mahama’s vice, Kwesi Bekoe Amissah-Arthur, also took his oath of office at the square whose arch was draped in Ghana’s colours- red, gold and green.
Cultural troupes entertained the guests, who started trooping to the venue as early as 7am. Armed and police bands also entertained the guests.
When Mahama emerged from the presidential limousine in an all-white flowing robe (agbada) for the inauguration, the energised crowd exploded with cheers. His vice chose the kente.
Led by the Chief Justice, Mrs. Georgina Theodora Wood, the vice-president was the first to take both the oaths of office and allegiance. He mounted the podium at 10.19am.
Mahama took his turn at 10.27am. He first took the oath of allegiance before a cheering crowd, members of the parliament and dignitaries.
A brief interruption followed before he took the oath of office declaring: “Having been elected to the high office of President of the Republic of Ghana do in the name of the Almighty God swear, solemnly affirm that I will be faithful and true to the Republic of Ghana.
“That I will at all times preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the Republic of Ghana; and that I dedicate myself to the service and well-being of the people of the Republic of Ghana and to do right to all manner of persons.

Fire guts INEC headquarters

Fire razed a section of Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC’s headquarters in Abuja, Monday, causing pandemonium around the Maitama area of the Federal Capital Territory, as staff of the commission ran to different directions for safety. The incident came barely 18 months after a similar one occurred in the office of the commission’s chairman, Professor Attahiru Jega, causing destruction on the visitors’ room as well as some computer sections. Vanguard gathered that the fire which started in the Voter Registry Department of the Commission may have been caused by electrical fault.
But unlike the previous one, the latest fire did not cause much damage as the men of the Federal Fire Service and the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, were on hand to contend the situation. The fire which lasted for about 30 minutes was said to have started at about 9:00 am in the morning and ended around 9:30am.Speaking to Journalists at the scene of the incident, the Director of Information Communication Technology, ICT, of the commission, Engineer Chidi Nwafor, no vital document of the commission was affected. Nwafor said, “There was a fire incident this morning. Between 9:12am to 9:30am we started perceiving odour like a burnt odour, so what we did was to look for the place. It was in the department they call voter registry.
“Most of us that were around that time had to use the normal fire extinguisher to try to stop the fire and at the same time we called the fire service and the fire service came, when the fire service came the NEMA came, as I am talking to you now the fire has been quenched so no more fire now. It was only one office that was affected,” he stated. The ICT Director, who said that only office equipment was damaged, however said that the cause of the fire outbreak was yet to be established and that preliminary investigations were ongoing to unravel the cause.
